The “Opposites: A Collaborative Book Experience” show in the Special Exhibit Gallery will feature the mixed media images of fifteen artists of the Upper Chesapeake Book Arts group from August 30th-October 28th. Many of the artists will be present during the September Art Loop Event on the 2nd. Additionally there will be live music by returning musician, Tom Christiansen, and book signings with Karin Harrison and Susan Robinson during the Opening Reception on September 2, 2022.
Upper Chesapeake Book Arts (UCBA) began in late 2016 with just a few people who were interested in creating and learning about making books. The members then and now have varied artistic backgrounds and are actively working in their main art discipline. Over the years the group has enjoyed making a variety of books, played with letterpress, visited the rare book collection at the University of Delaware Library, shared ideas and projects, and a favorite of UCBA is an annual paste paper creating meeting.
A group book was suggested near the beginning of UCBA as a potential project. In June of 2021 fifteen members committed to the book creation, eventually deciding on the theme of “Opposites.” The flutter book design format that was selected allows for each participant’s artwork to be bound easily into the book format. There are fourteen individual interpretations of opposites in the book in a wide variety of media, as you would expect from all the different artistic interests. The participating artists are: Deborah Arnold, Cynthia & Mark Batty, Caroline Coolidge Brown, R D Burton, Jill Cypher, Jenny Davies-Reazor, Rebecca Johnson Melvin, Deborah Mackie, Carol Maurer, Betsy Molina Mortenson, Ray Nichols, Patti Paulus, and Casey Smith.
The show consists of one framed individual page from each member, all available for purchase, and only one book will be for sale. More books, owned by the artists, will be available for viewing, allowing guests to observe subtle variations in the repeated works – similar but each one of a kind.
